My child has canker sores! How can I help?

Canker sores are small sores that can appear inside the cheeks, on the lips, on the gums, or under the tongue. They’re not contagious, but they can run in families and can be painful.

Why Kids Get Canker Sores

  • Vitamin B12, iron, or folic acid deficiencies.
  • Food allergies or sensitivities (an allergist visit may help if you suspect this).
  • Biting the lip or cheek.
  • Mouth injuries where the skin breaks.
  • Brushing too hard.
  • Sensitivity to toothpaste ingredients (try switching brands).
  • Emotional stress.

When to See a Dentist

If your child has frequent canker sores, a visit can help. Canker sores often last around 14 days, and your dentist may recommend treatments based on symptoms.

Helpful Home Care

  • Avoid acidic, salty, or spicy foods.
  • Use a soft‑bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoid mouthwash/toothpaste with SLS.
  • Avoid foods your child may be allergic to.

Canker Sore Remedies

  • Yogurt with acidophilus may help relieve pain and support healing.
  • Baking soda rinse: mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in an 8‑ounce glass of lukewarm water and swish/gargle several times daily.
